It is thanks to the bees that KOO has its spectacular beans. Under the rolling skies of eastern Mpumalanga, not far from the Swaziland border, bees have busied themselves making a truly unique honey. What’s their secret ingredient?
KOO Butter Beans. In the clean open air from one of our established farms, bees are collecting pollen and nectar from our expansive fields of butter beans to make a very special kind of honey.
It’s a partnership made in heaven, as without these industrious little insects there would be no crop to speak of. Unlike other crops like wheat or maize, beans need to be pollinated to bear fruit and once the wispy white flowers emerge the bees get to work. With every 3rd mouthful of food produced globally coming from bees pollinating crops, we are happy to have the bees as an integral part of our team.
And on this farm, you can tell that those little chaps have been busy, with over 350 tons of butter beans produced annually. The pollen collected by the bees becomes the most delectable honey – with an especially unique flavour – and the beans go on to the stringent selection process. Once passed, the beans become the wholesome KOO BUTTER BEANS you have come to trust as the best, added to soups and stews or to add their inherit earthy flavour to salads.
