KOO Celebrity Chef Moira Allison promises to bring creativity and enthusiasm to the table. With over 8 years experience at Tiger Brands and having received her training from the illustrious ML Sultan Hotel School, we are excited to have Moira cooking up a storm in the KOO kitchen.
From the young age of 6, she was in the kitchen experimenting and contributing to the family cooking, but was planning on a different career choice. Initially considering nursing as a career, in her matric year, she changed course rapidly and opted for the world of food.
“I decided to use my creativity and new found passion and chose to become a chef.”
Her love of food was cultivated from her family centred upbringing she said;
“My uncle was a great chef at the Carlton Hotel many, many years ago and most of my family are food orientated people. As I grew up, I realised that I loved food just as much!”
KOO was also a product she grew up with, she reminisced about days when her father used to give her tinned KOO fruit, served with Ideal milk or home-made custard. Braai days were an occasion for beetroot salad and creamstyle sweetcorn.
When it comes to her personal food tastes, her palate matches her passion for cooking – fiery! From curries to Mozambican peri peri prawns; wasabi loaded sushi and trinchado that will ‘have her singing in the shower’ - it is clear that her choices involve lots of spices and liberal amounts of chilli.
“My favourite is KOO CREAMSTYLE SWEETCORN, because I make the most awesome Cheesy Chilli (again with the chilli) Corn Bread and it comes out perfect each time.”
Even though she enjoys preparing desserts, she admitted that she didn’t indulge in them much, however she did say;
“I use KOO PEARS to make Caramel Pear Milkshakes topped with crushed honeycomb, really delicious. But, my favourite and my nemesis is good creamy ice-cream.”
Every chef has a style, something that sets them apart. Most chefs will tell you that cooking is an extension of themselves, an edible representation of their personality, to which she replied;
“I’m mostly a comfort-fusion food chef. I love to nurture and entertain people and there’s nothing better than when people rave about your food. I cook with lots of flavour, love trying new ingredients or blending unique flavours and love good old-fashioned homely cooking. I don’t really enjoy finicky food preparation.”
Moira has become KOO’s Brand Ambassador and Celebrity Chef. So we asked her about the key elements that she felt that we, at KOO, represented within the market and how she felt about joining the KOO family;
“I feel privileged and proud to work for a brand that has so much heritage, trust, is good quality. A brand that is known by any one walking on the street. The fact that KOO has been around for 75 years and has won so many awards is testament to the trust and love that people have for the KOO products. It’s a very warming feeling.”
Moira also knows that working with a homegrown and home-known brand like KOO, there is great responsibility in preserving our legacy. When asked what she would like her legacy with us to be, she said;
“I believe that my legacy to KOO would be to impart as much knowledge, creativity and ideas to as many consumers as possible. For this gift then to also be passed down to my children and family. I want to instil their trust in the product to ensure that KOO is still the best-loved product for another 75 years to come. KOO’s legacy will be to be remembered - for its consistent quality and exciting innovation for years to come.”
Moira will be demonstrating our delicious range on the Expresso show. Stay tuned for further details!
